Over the past 30 – 40 years, a large body of studies of scenic quality has been developed.
Various typologies or classifications of the studies have been proposed which are reviewed here.
There have been over 80 studies of scenic quality undertaken in Australia and these are described here.
Internationally there have been many more studies, stretching back to K. D. Fines’ landmark study of the East Sussex landscape in 1968 and Elwood Shafer’s natural landscape preferences model of 1969. Since then there have been well over 200 studies worldwide. The summary of these that may be found here describes a sample of these, by no means complete but an attempt to cover as many as possible.
